The measuring principle is based on the optical image of particles from a thin liquid film in a flow cell and the automatic recognition and characterisation by means of picture recognition algorithms. Particles ranging from 1 μm and up to 300 μm of diameter can be measured.

Real time measurement
The system OILPAS can be used in the real time operation as well as for lab analysis.During real time operation a variable partial flow of approximately 2 l / min is extracted from the liquid closed loop and recirculated at a suitable location. Combustion engines are especially easy to handle in this respect, e.g.,extraction occurs at the bleed screw of the oil sump and recirculation at the dipstick opening.

A software package visualises a picture preview, the picture as well as its evaluation. In the first step a background is calculated and potential objects (particle,bubbles, droplets, etc.) are recognised during the evaluation.

In the second step most different properties are calculated for all recognised potential objects (particles,bubbles, droplets, etc.). Beside optical properties as for example contrast or sharpness, shape properties are also counted among, as for example surface,expansion, solidity or eccentricity.

In the third step the potential objects (particles, bubbles,droplets, etc.) can be characterised and categorized using their properties. Objects (particles, bubbles,droplets, etc.) whose picture is too inexact for a reliable characterisation are not evaluated. Furthermore air bubbles or vague soiling can be distinguished from wear particles. Wear particles can be divided in different size or shape classes. Depending on the user's requirement, results of the evaluation for multiple captures can be shown as statistical distributions, as temporal distribution or as a combination of both.

Real time trends
During the measurement one can select which results are displayed. For example the number of Particles or the gas content. Operation data can be integrated to the Oilpas measurement using the analogue and digital inputs. (rpm, load,etc.)

Particle Maps
The shape of a particle is saved. The form is related to the cause of the particles appearance.
Bearing damage
In the lubricating oil of an engine with a defective main bearing system, particles were detected with a wide range of diameters by OILPAS. In contrast to the normal wear and tear, faulty components generate very large wear particles, they stick out from other particles caused by regular wear.
Wear of the cylinder wall
The visualization of particle size distribution reveals a significant accumulation of the particles with a diameter of 2-3 microns. This distribution was in found in the lubricating oil of an engine with a badly worn cylinder surface
